What is laissez-faire?
The name given to the ideas of those who believed that the government should take no action in the affairs of individuals and society.
Why did the government have a laissez-faire attitude?
It was cheaper as they didn’t have to intervene, therefore preventing a rise in taxes.
What did they believe caused poverty?
Laziness, drunkeness and a lack of morals.
What was Samuel Smiles’ attitude?
Self-help - Individuals were expected to get themselves out of poverty through education and hard work. He also said individuals were responsible for their own social standing and livelihood.
What was Thomas Malthus’ view?
The population was too high, which meant they may run out of food. He suggested getting rid of poor relief to rectify the problem.
