Attitude formation-process Flashcards
Give the head points of the 5 ways of learning attitude
-Association
-Reward/punishment
-Observation
-Group or Cultural Norms
-Exposure to Information
Explain how attitude is learnt through association
A positive/negative attitude is developed by associating that particular attitude with a positive/negative factor.
eg: liking a subject because liking the teacher
Explain how attitude is learnt through reward/punishment
attitude develops if the person is praised and diminished if the person is punished or if there is a negative outcome
eg: certificate for 100% attendance will increase likelihood of the person developing a positive attitude towards punctuality or regularity
Explain how attitude is learnt through observation
our observation of whether a person is rewarded or punished for showing a particular attitude will ensure whether we learn a particular attitude.
eg: siblings being punished for smoking may increase likelihood of the person developing a negative attitude towards smoking.
Explain how attitude is learnt through group or cultural norms
Norms are unwritten rules of behavior. Learning attitude through group or cultural norms may actually be an example of all three forms of learning described above-learning through association, reward/punishment and observation
eg: offering money, sweets, fruit and flowers in a place of worship is a normative behavior in some religions
Explain how attitude is learnt through exposure to information
media, meeting people of different cultures, exposure provided by social media etc. may provide new insights to different concepts often leading to development of new attitudes.
eg: reading biographies of self-actualized persons.
