Case study: Wall of silence in Ecuador

A

Key points:
- What is the relationship-building process like in the country and organisation?
- Ecuadorians were more vocal and forthcoming in one-on-one conversations (personal exchanges).
- This is a normal part of the ritual of relationship-building in some cultures, and an important precursor to effective communication (that will eventually happen).

Q

What are the lessons for global managers travelling to a new location?

A
  • Spend more time being observant - try to learn how the people communicate and integrate with one another in the organisational setting.
  • Don’t be too overzealous in trying to fit in, sometimes people will eventually come up to you to help you fit into the culture.
  • Learn the culture! Seek advice from someone who has worked in the country beforehand.
  • Being wary is a sign that people are concerned that identifying problems could be taken as public criticism of someone else in the room (it’s important to understand this!).
