Attack Reconnaissance Battalion / Squadron Flashcards
Mission of ARB / ARS
4 tasks:
zone, route, and area reconnaissance
screen
movement to contact
attack
Mission of ARB / ARS
Provides accurate and timely information collection; provides reaction time and maneuver space; and destroys, defeats, delays, diverts, or disrupts enemy forces in support of the combined arms team
Miltoe for ARS and ARB
ARS: 24 AH-64, 12 RQ-7
ARB: 24 AH-64, 12 MQ-1C
4 characteristics of offensive operations (SCAT):
audacity, concentration, surprise, tempo
2 attack forms:
deliberate and hasty. Amount of time available determines which for of attack with be used
4 steps to EA development:
intel prep of the BF are key task, select ground of attack, integrate EA, direct fire plan
What acronym is used to identify criteria for selecting fire positions (FP)?
B - Background
R - Range
A - Target Altitude
S - Sun or full moon
S - Shadow
C - Concealment
R - Rotor wash
A - Maneuver area
F - Fields of Fire
3 employment methods
Continuous, phased (generally reverts to continuous due to FARP limitations), max destruction
BP is selected by
BN commander and is restrictive
Holding point
is behind FLOT by 2-5 km and allows for last minute recon
Techniques of weapons delivery
Hover: below ETL, stationary or moving
Running: moving helicopter above ETL, maximizes survivability from small arms
Diving: most accurate. Greater airspeed and altitude of the aircraft improves accuracy
Figure 8:
alternates direction of attack and egress; when there is limited maneuver area; suitable for targets that lack inbound attack direction
Figure 8 minimizes sound
Forms of security
Screen: provides early warning to the protected force, aviation units can operate independently, provides the least protection, defensive in nature – least protected
Guard: protects main body from direct fires, observation, and surprise attacks, cannot be done by aviation independently, offensive (crossover)
Cover: operates independently from the main unit, tactically self-contained and protects from direct and indirect fires, offensive
Area: offensive, protects installations, routes, actions (not a key task). Types: aerial, convoy, route, local
Reconnaissance
GORRDDE
Zone is restrictive, area is not
Fundamentals of security?
MOPPP
Maintain enemy contact
Orient on the protected force, area, or facility
Provide reaction time and maneuver space
Perform continuous reconnaissance
Provide early and accurately warning
NORMA
N- Nature of the target
O- Obstacles
R- Range to target
M- Multiple Firing Positions/Lanes
A- Area to Maneuver
TPMR
Aircraft to aircraft
Technique of weapons delivery.
❑ Hovering. ❑ Running. ❑ Diving.
Pattern/direction of attack.
❑ Inbound heading of initial attack run. ❑ Racetrack (turns/pull offs). ❑ Cloverleaf (turns/pull offs). ❑ L-attack (turns/pull offs). ❑ 45-degree attack (turns/pull offs) ❑ Figure eight (turns) ❑ Circular (turns)
Munitions
Type of target.
❑ Minimize collateral damage.
Ranges
❑ Bump point. ❑ Start fire point. ❑ Break/stop fire point.
Check in brief gives
ground commander information on air reconnaissance team’s restrictions or limitations. Each time a new team arrives on station.
- The AMC should request a task and purpose from the ground maneuver commander upon completion of the check-in brief. (Not required)
What are the four offensive tasks according to ATP 3-04.1?
• Movement to Contact
- Attack
* Friendly forces in close enemy contact
* Enemy forces out of contact with friendly forces
* Not doctrinally conducted by ARB/ARS*
• Exploitation
• Pursuit
GORRDDE
G- Gain and maintain enemy contact
O- Orient on the reconnaissance objective
R- Report all information rapidly and accurately
R- Retain freedom to maneuver
D- Develop the situation rapidly
D- Do not keep reconnaissance assets in reserve
E- Ensure continuous reconnaissance
