Sroufe’s theory of emotional development
- emotion is complex and dynamic process, cannot be defined by simple, single states
- emotion as intrapersonal event determined by a person’s evaluation of the situation
- there is order to development (ontogenetic)

- evaluated whether feeding or contact was more improtant to attachment
- need for affection made stronger bond than physical needs (food)

What is an internal working model of attachment?
cognitive framework compromising of mental represetations fro understanding the world, self, and others

- persistant across time
- involves a specific person
- emotionally significant
- indy wishes to maintain proximity/close contact with the person
- distress at involuntary seperation from the person
- in times of distress, indy seeks security and comfort in relationship with the person

- reflects only one feature of relationship with the mother: the component that deals with behavior related to child’s protection and security in times of stress
- cannot be presumed to exist even though a relationship may contain attachment component
