Define maternal deprivation
It is the emotional and intellectual consequences of separation between a child and his/her mother or mother substitute
When did the research take place?
The 1950s
Explain what was different in the 1950s
-Mothers stayed at home and looked after children
-Fathers didn’t really take a caring role
-Hospital stays for children meant that their parents dropped them off and came back when it was time to pick them up
-No visiting hours for children or parents
What are social releasers?
Cute behaviours that activate the adult attachment system
What is the critical period?
The period of time where an attachment must occur if it’s to occur at all
