Atropine Part 1 Flashcards
What drug is atropine classed as?
Muscarinic acetycholine antagonist
Blocks acetylcholine receptors
How many types of acetylcholine receptors does someone have and what’s the names of them ?
There are 2
Muscarinic and nicotinic
Where do Muscarinic receptors function ?
CNS
PNS
& found in the ❤️, 🫁 & intestines. these are visceral organs (soft tissue organs)
Why are they called Muscarinic receptors ?
It mimics a natural alkaloid called muscarine in the body
What’s the natural neurotransmitter of the parasympathetic nervous system?
Acetylcholine
Does acetylecholine speed up or slow down the heart?
Slows down the ❤️
Since acetycholine slows the heart down how would atropine work ?
It blocks the effects of acetylcholine on tue SA node thus allowing the SA node to sure its expected rate of 60-100
It allows potassium to enter
Enhances the conduction between SA and AV node & doesn’t work beyond the AV node so pts with heart blocks
What does paroxysmal mean…
3 worded answer
Time to Time
What are the indications for Attopine ?
- Absolute bradycardia (less than 40 bpm)
- Systolic blood pressure below expected age
- Paroxysmal ventricular arrythmias requiring suppression
( Check photo - each arrow shows when you’d feel a radial beat ) - Inadequate perfusion causing confusion
- Bradycardia following ROSC
