What is hypertrophy?
Increase in size of a tissue caused by an increase in size of the constituent cells
What is hyperplasia?
Increase in size of a tissue caused by an increase in number of the constituent cells.
Example of hypertrophy
Skeletal muscle
Example of hyperplasia
Smooth muscle, enlarged prostate, endometrium.
Example of combined hypertrophy and hyperplasia
Pregnancy
What is atrophy?
Decrease in size of a tissue caused by a decrease in the number of the constituent cells or a decrease in their size.
Metaplasia
The change in differentiation of a cell from one fully-differentiated type to a different fully-differentiated type.
Example of metaplasia
Bronchus in a smoker changes from ciliated columnar epithelium to squamous epithelium
Example of dysplasia
Imprecise term for the morphological (structure) changes in cells in the progression to becoming cancer.
