ATPL Flight Planning Book Flashcards
What is MORA?
What are the 2 categories of MORA?
What do they not provide?
MINIMUM OFF ROUTE ALTITUDE;
ROUTE MORA and GRID MORA;
NOT provide navigational SIGNAL or COMMUNICATION coverage
What clearances does route MORA give?
Above TERRAIN or MAN MADE structures within 10nm EITHER SIDE of airway and 10nm RADIUS at END of airway;
1000ft VERTICAL clearance from TERRAIN and 2000ft in MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN (where terrain rises 3000ft in less than 10nm)
What clearances does grid MORA give?
Above TERRAIN or MAN MADE structures within LATITUDE and LONGITUDE block usually of 1 DEGREE;
Presented in FEET with the first 2 FIGURES ie: 76 = 7600ft;
1000ft VERTICAL clearance where highest ELEVATION is 5000ft MSL or BELOW and 2000ft where highest ELEVATION is 5001ft MSL or ABOVE
What is MOCA?
How is identified?
MINIMUM OBSTACLE CLEARANCE ALTITUDE;
LOWEST altitude between RADIO FIXES on VOR airways, OFF airway routes or ROUTE SEGMENTS which meet clearance for ENTIRE route segment;
IDENTIFIED by altitude then LETTER T
What are the clearances for MOCA?
MAXIMUM TERRAIN or OBSTACLE ELEVATION PLUS 1000ft when LESS than or EQUAL to 5000ft or 2000ft when GREATER than 5000ft
How does MOCA relate to MORA?
When is it typically used?
MOCA is usually AT or BELOW MEA and may put BELOW RADAR and NAVAID coverage/MRA;
In EMERGENCIES especially during ICING
What is SH?
What is SH based off?
SAFETY HEIGHT;
JEPPESEN GRID MORA
What clearances does SH give?
Area 50nm EITHER SIDE of TRACK and 50nm SEMI CIRCLE around END of each SECTOR;
1000ft VERTICAL clearance where highest ELEVATION is 5000ft MSL or BELOW and 2000ft where highest ELEVATION is 5001ft MSL or ABOVE;
What does DARP stand for?
What is the purpose of it?
Does the captain have to use this?
DYNAMIC AIRBORNE ROUTE PLANNING system;
Uses NEW FORECASTS to plan MORE ECONOMICAL ROUTE NOT LESS than 20 MINUTES ahead of current TIME and POSITION;
NOT REQUIRED to be used
What are the required briefing documents?
COVER SHEET; DESPATCH MESSAGE and CREW LIST; Computer generated FLIGHT PLAN; CREW MAIL BRIEFING; ROUTE PLOT
What are the fuel requirements for IFR in terms of holding?
Turbine: Fly from the AERODROME of INTENDED LANDING to the ALTERNATE AERODROME and fly after that for 30 MINUTES at HOLDING SPEED at 1500ft ABOVE the AERODROME;
Non-turbine: Fly from the AERODROME of INTENDED LANDING to the ALTERNATE AERODROME and fly after that for 45 MINUTES at HOLDING SPEED at 1500ft ABOVE the AERODROME
Where does excess fuel come from?
When fuel RESERVES are LESS than ETP/PNR fuel required
What is THFA?
What are the conditions of it?
TRAFFIC HOLDING FUEL ADVISORY by NOTAM;
Hold in RACETRACK at 20000ft
What is the purpose of fuel tankering?
When the PRICE of FUEL at DEPARTURE aerodrome is advantageous so that the ADDITIONAL WEIGHT is MORE ECONOMICAL
When is a destination considered to be closed?
FORECAST WEATHER is BELOW LANDING MINIMA;
INTER or TEMPO forecasts BELOW LANDING MINIMA
