ATP- Adenosine Triphosphate- Structure, Synthesis and Breakdown Flashcards
What does an ATP molecule consist of?
An ATP molecule consists of a purine nitrogenous base called adenine covalently bonded to a 5-carbon sugar called ribose to which 3 phosphate molecules are added.
What type of reaction are involved in building an ATP molecule?
Condensation reaction.
Draw the structure of an ATP molecule.
Adenine, ribose, 3 phosphate molecules.
Definition of Phosphorylation.
Definition of Hydrolyzation.
Definition of Synthesis.
Phosphorylation refers to the addition of phosphate to a compound.
Hydrolyzation is the process by which water is used to break down a compound.
Synthesis refers to the production of an organic compound by combining two or more components.
List the steps involved in the synthesis of an ATP molecule.
Firstly, the nitrogenous base, adenine, combines with a ribose sugar to form adenosine which then condenses with a phosphoric acid molecule as well as 14.2 KJ per mol to form AMP + Water. Secondly, AMP combines with a phosphoric acid molecule as well as 30.6 kJ per mol to form ADP + Water. Then ADP combines with a third phosphoric acid molecule and 30.6 kJ per mol of energy as well as the enzyme ATP synthase to form ATP + Water.
List the steps involved in the hydrolyzation of an ATP molecule.
Firstly, ATP and water are hydrolyzed in a reaction that is catalyzed by ATPase enzyme/ ATP hydrolase enzyme to ADP, a phosphoric acid molecule and 30.6 kJ per mol of energy. Then, ADP and water are hydrolyzed to an AMP molecule, a phosphoric acid molecule and 30.6 kJ per mol of energy. Lastly, the molecule of AMP and water are hydrolyzed to a molecule of adenosine, a phosphoric acid molecule and 14.2 kJ per mol of energy.
