ATP Flashcards
1
Q
Why is ATP a better immediate energy source than glucose?
A
- Small amounts of energy are released
- The hydrolysis is a single reaction that releases immediate energy
- ATP, however, cannot be stored
2
Q
What is ATP used for?
A
- Metabolic processes (building up macromolecules eg proteins)
- Movement
- Active transport
- Secretion
- Activation of molecules
3
Q
How is ATP synthesised?
A
- Involves the addition of phosphate to ADP
- Photophosphorylation: takes place during photosynthesis
- Oxidative phosphorylation: occurs in mitochondria during electron transport
- Substrate-level phosphorylation: occurs in the formation of Pyruvate at the end of glycolysis
