ATP Flashcards

1
Q

Why is ATP a better immediate energy source than glucose?

A
  • Small amounts of energy are released
  • The hydrolysis is a single reaction that releases immediate energy
  • ATP, however, cannot be stored

Q

What is ATP used for?

A
  • Metabolic processes (building up macromolecules eg proteins)
  • Movement
  • Active transport
  • Secretion
  • Activation of molecules

Q

How is ATP synthesised?

A
  • Involves the addition of phosphate to ADP
  • Photophosphorylation: takes place during photosynthesis
  • Oxidative phosphorylation: occurs in mitochondria during electron transport
  • Substrate-level phosphorylation: occurs in the formation of Pyruvate at the end of glycolysis
