ATP Flashcards
Lesson 4
Respiration?
The breakdown of glucose to gain energy. Glucose comes from the breakdown and digestion of starch.
What is aerobic respiration?
Uses oxygen to break down glucose
Energy is released in mitochondria
Long term energy supply
What is anaerobic respiration?
Release of energy from glucose due to the lack of oxygen
Occurs when there’s not enough oxygen for aerobic respiration.
Short term energy supply
What is anaerobic respiration (yeast)?
Yeast respire anaerobically without oxygen and produce alcohol/carbon dioxide.
Fermentation
Aerobic formula?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> 6CO2 + 6H2O (+ energy)Glucose + Oxygen —> Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy
Anaerobic formula?
C6H12O6 —> 2C3H6O3 (+ some energy)
Glucose —–> lactic acid + some ATP
Negative effects of anaerobic respiration?
Negative effects: Buildup of lactic acid which can slowly poison your body and muscle cramps
Anaerobic respiration in yeat formula?
C6H12O6 —-> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2 +ATP
Glucose —-> Ethanol + Carbon dioxide + Energy
What is ATP?
Adenosine triphosphate is the currency of energy.
Every cell uses ATP for energy.
It transports chemical energy within cells for metabolism.
