ATP Flashcards
1
Q
In respiration, the energy released from glucose is used to make…
A
ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
2
Q
ATP structure
A
Adenine > ribose sugar > three phosphate groups
3
Q
When energy is needed, how is ATP used?
A
ATP is hydrolysed into ADP and Pi, catalysed by ATP hydrolase. A phosphate bond is broken and energy is released
4
Q
How can inorganic phosphate be used?
A
Can be added to another compound (phosphorylation), often making the compound more reactive
5
Q
How is ATP resynthesised?
A
Condensation reaction between ADP and Pi, catalysed by ATP synthase
6
Q
ATP uses
A
- Production of body heat
- Synthesis of biomolecules
- Muscle contraction
- Chemical activation
- Active transport
7
Q
How is ATP a suitable energy source for cells to use?
A
- Can be rapidly resynthesised
- Releases small amounts of energy (little energy lost as heat)
- Phosphorylates other compounds, making them more reactive
- Does not leave cells (charged/polar)
