Atoms (kind of) Flashcards
What is an ionic bond
Strong electrostatic forces between oppositely charged ions
Why do ionic compounds have high melting point
You need a lot of heat/ energy to break the forces apart
How are ionic compounds formed
Electrons are transferred from metal atoms to non metal atoms producing cations and anions
What is the mass number
The mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons ( the top number )
What is an element
A substance whose atoms have the same number of protons
What particles equal each other
The number of neutrons always equal the protons
What is the relative mass of the three particles
Protons = 1
Neutron= 1
Electron=0
How are the Elements arranged in the periodic table
In the order of increasing atomic number
What is the atomic number
The number of protons in an atom
If an atom has 8 electrons state its electronic configuration
2,6
Describe the particles in a solid
Close together and a regular pattern. Vibrate around a fixed position
State why chlorine is used in water treatment
To kill microbes / sterilise the water
