Atoms, Elements, Molecules, and Compounds Flashcards
What is an Atom?
A Atom is the smallest particle of an element that can exist.
What is an Element?
A Element is a pure chemical substance that cannot be physically split into a more simple substance. Each is made of one type of atom. Carbon, mercury and hydrogen are examples.
What is an Molecule?
A Molecule is an smallest particle of a substance that can exist. It is composed of two or more atoms.
What is an Compound?
A compound is a substance made of atoms from two or more elements.
What is an Proton?
A Proton is a particle of matter that has a positive electrical charge and found in the nucleus of an atom.
What is an Neutron?
A Neutron is a particle of matter that has no electrical charge and is found in the nucleus of an atom.
What is an Electron?
An Electron is a particle of matter that has a negative electrical charge and travels around the nucleus of an atom.
What is an Atomic Number?
A Atomic Number = the number of protons in an element’s atoms. Top number in the element box.
What is a Mass Number?
A Mass Number, is a number of protons plus neutrons. Bottom number in the element box.
What is a Subscript?
A Subscript is a tiny number to the right of the element symbol. Tells you how many atoms of that element.
What is a Chemical symbol?
A Chemical symbol is a one or two letter representation of an element.
