16
Q

group number =?
period number =?

A

group number = valence shell electrons
period number = number of energy shells

17
Q

what is an isotope?

A

different atoms of the same element that contain the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.

  • isotopes of an element have the same chemical properties and go through the same chemical reactions.
18
Q

How do we find the Ar (Relative Atomic Mass)?

A

(relative abundance1 x isotope1 mass) + (relative abundance 2 x isotope2 mass) ÷ 100

19
Q

why do elements make compounds?

A

in order to become stable. as they have an incomplete outer shell they are unstable, and react to gain a full outer shell and become stable.

20
Q

what are the ways to obtain a full outer shell?

A
  • gaining electrons
  • losing electrons
  • sharing electrons
21
Q

what is an ion?

A

an electrically charged atom or group of atoms formed by the loss or gain of electron(s).

22
Q

what are the two types of ions?

A
  • cations (positive ions)
  • anions (negative ions)
