Atoms, Elements and Compounds Flashcards
What charge are protons
Positive, they reside in the nucleus
What charge are nutrons
They don’t have a charge, they reside in the nucleus
What charge are electrons
Negatively, they orbit the nucleus
Define element
A pure substance made up of only one type of atom.
Define compound
A compound is a pure substance made from two or more different elements that are chemically bonded.
Define molecule
Two or more atoms chemically join together.
Name the groups of the periodic table

When naming 2 elements combined the ending is usually
something-ide (e.g. sodium and chlorine = sodium chloride)
when 3 or more elements combine and one of them is oxygen (O) the ending is
something-ate (e.g. calcium, carbon and oxygen make calcium carbonate)
