Atoms, Compounds And Isotopes Flashcards
What does the atomic number tell us?
Number of protons and is equal to the number of electrons.
How do you work out the number of neutrons in an element?
Subtract the atomic number from the mass number
Explain what a compound is and give and example?
Compounds are formed when atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined together. For example, carbon dioxide is a compound formed from a chemical reaction between carbon and oxygen.
What is the definition of an isotope?
Isotopes are: different atomic forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
Name a popular pair of isotopes…
Carbon-12 and Carbon-14
They both have 6 protons and 6 electrons each
C12 has 6 neutrons and C14 has 8 neutrons
What does the mass number tell us?
Total number of protons and neutrons
