atoms and elements Flashcards

1
Q

where is the nucleus/what does it contain?

A
  1. its in the middle of the atom
  2. it contains protons and neutrons
  3. (pro)tons are (pos)itively charged
  4. (neut)rons have no charge(neutral)
  5. nucleus has a positive charge
  6. its tiny compared to the rest of the atom

Q

where are the electrons/what are they?

A
  1. they move around the nucleus
  2. they’re negatively charged
  3. tiny, but cover a lot of space
  4. they occupy shells around the nucleus
  5. shells explain the chemistry

Q

protons and electrons

A
  1. atoms have no charge overall.
  2. the charge on the electrons is the same size as the charge on the protons- but opposite
  3. this means the number of protons always equals the number of electrons in an atom
  4. if some electrons are added or removed, the atom becomes charged and is then a ion

Q

elements

A
  1. atoms can have different numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons
  2. eg. an atom with one proton in its nucleus is hydrogen and a atom with 2 protons is helium
  3. is a substance only contains one type of atom its called a element
  4. so all the atoms of a particular element(e.g. nitrogen) have the same number of protons
