atoms and elements Flashcards
1
Q
where is the nucleus/what does it contain?
A
- its in the middle of the atom
- it contains protons and neutrons
- (pro)tons are (pos)itively charged
- (neut)rons have no charge(neutral)
- nucleus has a positive charge
- its tiny compared to the rest of the atom
2
Q
where are the electrons/what are they?
A
- they move around the nucleus
- they’re negatively charged
- tiny, but cover a lot of space
- they occupy shells around the nucleus
- shells explain the chemistry
3
Q
protons and electrons
A
- atoms have no charge overall.
- the charge on the electrons is the same size as the charge on the protons- but opposite
- this means the number of protons always equals the number of electrons in an atom
- if some electrons are added or removed, the atom becomes charged and is then a ion
4
Q
elements
A
- atoms can have different numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons
- eg. an atom with one proton in its nucleus is hydrogen and a atom with 2 protons is helium
- is a substance only contains one type of atom its called a element
- so all the atoms of a particular element(e.g. nitrogen) have the same number of protons
