Atoms Flashcards
Define Atom
An atom is the smallest constituent unit of ordinary matter that constitutes a chemical element.
(Smallest unit of an element)
Define the 3 subatomic particles of an atom
Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
What are the Charges of each Atomic Particle
Each Proton has a Positive charge
Each Neutron has a Neutral charge
Each electron has a Negative charge
Explain the location of each atomic particle
Protons and Neutrons are located in the nuclei (Center) of an atom.
Electrons buzz around the orbit of the nuclei
Explain how an element is defined
An element is defined by the number of protons in their atoms.
Therefore, you can change the number of Neutrons and Electrons. But, if you change the number of protons, the entire element is changed.
Define Isotopes
Isotopes are variants of a particular chemical element that differ in Neutrons.
How do you Reperesent Isotopes
First you write the element symbol
On the left hand Subscript, you write the number of Protons
On the left hand Superscript, you write the combined number of protons and neutrons
How do you represent isotopes using Hyphen Notation
You Represent Isotopes by writing the entire chemical name as stating the total numbe of Protons and Neutrons after the hyphen
(Carbon-12)
Explain what an Element is
An element is a pure substance.
It cannot be broken down by any chemical means because
