Atoms Flashcards
What is an atom?
An atom is the smallest part of an element that can exist by itself
What is found in the nucleus?
Protons and Electrons
What orbits around the nucleus?
Electrons
What is the charge of a proton, electron and neutron?
Proton = +1 Neutron = 0 Electron = -1
What is the mass of a proton, electron and neutron?
Proton = 1 Electron = 0 Neutron = 1
What does the atomic number tell you?
The number of protons and electrons
What does the mass number tell you?
The sum of protons and electrons
How many protons electrons and neutrons in sodium?
Protons = 11 Electrons = 11 Neutrons = 12
What is an isotope?
An element with the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons
What is the definition of the relative atomic mass, Ar?
The average mass of atoms of an element taking into account the mass and amount of each isotope it contains, on a scale where the mass of a 12C is 12
What idea did John Dalton have about atoms?
Everything is made up of particles called atoms. Atoms cannot be divided
How did J.J. Thompson discover electrons?
Conduction of electricity through gases
Using gold leaf and alpha particles, Rutherford, Geiger and Marsden discovered what?
Positive nucleus in the centre of the atom
What did Chadwick discover?
Neutrons
What is the electron arrangement and short hand for sodium?
