Atoms Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 5 things about nucleus (in atoms)

A
  • it’s in the middle of the atom
  • it contains protons and neutrons
  • the nucleus has a radius of around 1x10’15m
  • it has a + charge because of the protons
  • almost all the mass in concentrated in the nucleus

Q

How are atoms neutral

A

They are neutral because there number of protons = to number of electrons

6
Q

What is an ion and how is it not neutral

A

An ion is an atom or groups of atoms that has lost or gained electrons

And in ions the number of protons don’t = number of electrons so this means it has an overall charge

Eg ion with -2 charge has more electrons then protons

7
Q

How does the overall charge of Atom work using protons and electrons

A

The charge of protons is =to charge of electrons so both charges cancel out each other
