Atoms Flashcards
What does the circle with a minus inside represent on an atom diagram?
An electron
What does the circle that isn’t filled in represent on an atom diagram?
A neutron
What does the filled in circle represent on an atom diagram?
A proton
The outside of an atom is called?
The shell
What is the bottom number of an element called?
The atomic number
What is the largest number of an element called?
The mass number
How do you work out how many protons, neutrons and electrons are in the atom of an element?
You take the mass number away from the atomic number to get the number of neutrons and the electrons and protons are the same as the bottom number (the atomic number)
Crosses on the shells of an atom represent?
The electrons
How do you know how many crosses to put onto a shell?
The crosses represent electrons so put the same number of crosses as the atomic number of the element onto the shell
How many crosses can the first shell hold?
2
How many crosses can all of the other shells hold?
8
