Atoms Flashcards
Electrons:
Move around the nucleus
Negative charge
Tiny compared to the nucleus
Virtually no mass
Occupy shells around the nucleus
The nucleus
Middle of the atom
Contains protons and neutrons
Overall positive charge
Almost the whole mass of an atom is concentrated in the nucleus
Tiny compared to the atom
Neutrons:
Heavy
Neutral (no charge)
Found in the nucleus of an atom
Protons:
Heavy
Positively charged
Found in the nucleus of an atom
Protons = Electrons
Neutral atoms have no charge overall
Charge on the electrons same size as the charge on the protons
Number of protons always equals number of electrons in an atom
Electron Shell Rules:
Electrons always occupy shells
Lowest energy levels are always filled first
Electron configuration - 2,8,8,2
Atoms much happier when they have full electron shells
In most atoms outer shell is not full which makes atom want to react
Atomic number:
How many protons there are in an atom
Unique to that element
Tells you how many electrons there are
Bottom number
Mass number:
Total number of protons and neutrons in the atom
Top number
