Atoms Flashcards
What type of substance is air?
Mixture, compound, element
A mixture.
What is an element?
A substance that contains only one type of atom.
What is a compound?
A substance that is made from two or more elements.
What is a mixture?
A material system made up of two or more different substances which are mixed but are not chemically combined.
What is an atom made up of?
Protons, neutrons and electrons.
The protons and neutrons make up the centre of the atom.
This is the nucleus.
What relative charge do protons have?
+1
What relative charge do electrons have.
-1
What relative charge do neutrons have?
They have no electric charge.
They are neutral.
True or false? Atoms carry a different number of protons to electrons?
False?
They are equal so they carry no overall charge.
True or false? Does the atomic number equal the number of protons and the number of electrons?
True
What is the mass number of an atom?
The atomic number + the number of neutrons.
