Atoms Flashcards
What determines the type or kind of an atom?
the number of protons in the nucleus
An atom of Sulfur has an atomic number of 16 and a mass number of 32. How many Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons are in an atom of Sulfur?
16 Protons
16 Electrons
16 Neutrons
Do isotopes have the same atomic numbers AND same mass numbers?
No, same atomic number, but different mass numbers
Why is the nucleus positively charged?
Because of the protons
How do you determine the number of neutrons?
Subtract the atomic number (protons) from the Mass number.
Where are the electrons located
In energy shells around the nucleus
Atoms are neutral. What does this mean (why)?
There are the saem number of positive protons as negative electrons.
What does the Atomic number tell you?
The number of protons in an atom. Also, the number of electrons
The two particles that make up the nucleus.
Protons and Neutrons
What is counted when we look at the mass of an atom?
The number of protons and neutrons
What are isotopes?
different forms of the same element, but with different numbers of NEUTRONS
What is an element?
A substance made up of only one kind of atom, with the same number of protons in their nucleus.
All matter is composed of what?
Atoms…super tiny things we can’t see!
The number of protons equals…
The atomic number, or number of electrons
What is in the middle of an atom?
The Nucleus
