Atoms Flashcards
What is an Isotope?
An atom that either loses or gains neutrons, changing the atoms mass number but not atomic number.
Can be written as Carbon -13.
What happens to unstable isotopes?
Called radioisotopes.
Release radioactive energy.
Used in the field on nuclear medicine (cancer treatments, CT scans, etc.)
What is an inert atom?
A non reactive atom.
Outer valence shell is full, no vacancies
Stable.
Ionic Bond
A metal atom transfers electrons to a nonmetal atom to create positively charged cations and negatively charged anions that then bond to form a molecule.
What is the strongest type of bond?
Covalent bonds
What is an atom?
the smallest unit of matter that is non-divisible by chemical means.
What are the smaller components that make up an atom?
Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
What is the atomic number of an atom?
The number of protons in the nucleus of the atom.
What is atomic mass?
The number of protons plus neutrons in an atom
How many electrons are in each orbital of an atom?
1st orbital - 2
2nd orbital - 8
3rd orbital - up to 18, but satisfied with 8
