Atomic Structure & The Periodic Table Flashcards
What is the charge on a proton a neutron and a electron??????
Neutrons - 0
Protons- +1
Electrons- -1
Where in the periodic table do you find: Noble gases Alkali metals Halogens Metals Non metals Transition metals
noble gases = group 0 Alkali metals = group 1 Halogens = group 7 Metals = left Non metals = right Transition metals = from Rf to Hg (middle)
What is an atomic number and a mass number?
- Mass number is the top number of an atom which is the mass of its electrons and neutrons.⬆️
- atomic number (proton number) the amount of protons in a atom the bottom number.⬇️
How are atoms arranged in the periodic table?
They are arranged in by there atomic number :)
How are the electrons arranged inside an atom?
They are in shells first shell can hold 2 Second can hold 8 3rd can hold 8 4th can hold 8 5th can hold 8 6th can hold 8 7th can hold 8 8th can hold 8
Why are the atoms of group 0 elements so unreactive?
They have a full outer shell
How is the number electrons in the outer shell of an atom related to its chemical properties?
The amount of electrons on the outer shell decided of how reactive it is
How do metals and non metals bond to each other?
Metals form positively charged ions and non-metals from negativity charged ions They react together making compounds which is called ionic bonds( opposite attract each other )
How do non metals bond to each other?
It is called covalent bond ( more information on page 141){by sharing electrons}
How do we write the formula of a compound?
For Magnesium Mg2+ & chlorine Cl- to join together you need 2 chlorines to make the equation balanced. MgCl2
