Atomic Structure & The periodic table Flashcards
To understand atomic structure & the periodic table
What are the three subatomic particles in an atom?
Protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Where are protons, neutrons, and electrons located in an atom?
Protons and neutrons are in the nucleus; electrons orbit around the nucleus.
How do you determine the number of protons in an element?
The number of protons equals the atomic number of the element.
What is the mass number of an atom?
The sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
What is an isotope?
An atom with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
What is an ion?
An atom that has gained or lost electrons, making it positively or negatively charged.
How is the periodic table organized?
By increasing atomic number, with elements grouped by similar properties.
Where is a period and a group located on the periodic table?
A period is a row (horizontal), and a group is a column (vertical).
