Atomic Structure & The Periodic Table Flashcards
What does the atomic number tell you?
How many protons there are
What does the mass number tell you?
The total number of protons and neutrons in the atom
What is an element?
A substance made up of atoms that all have the same number of protons in their nucleus
What is an isotope?
Different forms of the same element which have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
What is a compound?
When elements react atoms combine with other atoms
What are the Group 1 elements?
Alkali Metals
What are the Group 7 elements?
Halogens
What are the Group 0 elements?
Noble Gases
List the Group 1 properties
Increasing reactivity Lower melting and boiling points Higher relative atomic mass Soft Low density
List the Group 7 properties
Less reactive
Higher melting and boiling points
Higher relative atomic mass
Form ionic bonds with metals
List the Group 0 properties
Boiling points increase as you move down the group
Colourless
Inert (not reactive)
Which element groups are most likely to form ions?
