atomic structure and the periodic table Flashcards
what does soluble mean?
it can be dissolved in water
what is a solvent?
a solution able to absorb another
what does abundance mean?
a lot of
what is the purpose of filtration?
to separate an insoluble solid from a solution
what is the purpose of distillation?
to separate a solvent from a solution
what is the purpose of fractional distillation?
to separate substances with varying boiling points
what is the purpose of crystallisation?
to separate a soluble solid from a solution
what is the purpose of chromatography?
to separate soluble coloured compounds
what was the plum pudding model and who devised it?
j. j thompson - it was a mode of the atom
- the mass and positive charge was evenly distributed
- with negative charge embedded like plums in a plum pudding
what was the nuclear model and who devised it?
rutherford - it was a model of the atom
- the mass and charge was concentrated in a very small, dense nucleus in the centre
- most of the atom was empty space
how did the results of the gold foil experiment dictate the nuclear model?
most of the alpha particles went straight through - most of the atom is mostly empty space
some of the particles were deflected at large angles - the mass is concentrated in the centre in a positively charged nucleus ( because positive charges repel )
very few came straight back - the mass is concentrated in a very small space in the centre of the atom ( because the chance of hitting it was very small )
what is the relative mass of an electron?
1/2000
