Q

what was the plum pudding model and who devised it?

A

j. j thompson - it was a mode of the atom
- the mass and positive charge was evenly distributed
- with negative charge embedded like plums in a plum pudding

Q

what was the nuclear model and who devised it?

A

rutherford - it was a model of the atom

  • the mass and charge was concentrated in a very small, dense nucleus in the centre
  • most of the atom was empty space

Q

how did the results of the gold foil experiment dictate the nuclear model?

A

most of the alpha particles went straight through - most of the atom is mostly empty space

some of the particles were deflected at large angles - the mass is concentrated in the centre in a positively charged nucleus ( because positive charges repel )

very few came straight back - the mass is concentrated in a very small space in the centre of the atom ( because the chance of hitting it was very small )
