Atomic Structure And Isotopes A Level Flashcards
Isotope
Atoms with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
Relative atomic mass
The weighted average mass of an element relative to the mass of 1/12 a carbon12 atom
Relative isotopic mass
The mass of an isotope relative to the mass of 1/12 a carbon 12 atom
Relative molecular mass
Relative molecular mass of a molecule is the sum of the relative atomic masses of the constituent atoms in one molecule
Relative formula mass
Relative formula mass of a compound is the sun of the relative atomic masses of constituent atoms in one formula unit
What is a mass spectrometer used for?
It gives you the percentage abundance of an isotope
Number of electrons that fill the first four shells
1st shell —> 2 e
2nd shell —> 8e
3rd shell —> 18e
4th shell —> 32e
Orbital
A 3 dimensional space that can hold 2 electrons with opposite spins
Rule of orbitals
Orbitals in a sub shell half full before any completely fill
Subshell
It’s a set of orbitals which all have the same energy but different orientations
