atomic structure Flashcards
what is an atom
an atom is the smallest particle of an element that can exist by itself and still have the same chemical properties as the element
what are the subatomic particles
- nucleus
- protons
- neutrons
what are the characteristics of the subatomic particles
proton has a relative charge of +1 and a relative mass of 1
characteristic of neutron
relative charge of - and relative mass of 1
characteristic of electrons
relative charge of -1 and relative mass of 1/1840
what is atomic number
atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of one atom of an element
what is mass number
mass number is the total number of protons and neutrons in an element
how to find number of neutrons
mass number- atomic number
what is an isotope
an isotope are different atoms of a single element that have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
what is an isotopy
isotopy is the occurrence of atoms of a single element that have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
what is radioactivity
Radioactivity is the emission of particles and electromagnetic rays from the nucleus of an unstable atom
what are 3 uses of radioactive isotopes
- cancer treatment
- heart pacers
- tracer
explain the cancer treatment
cancerous tumor cells can be destroyed by radiation beam from radioactive cobalt-60 at the cells or it can be injected directly into the tumor
explain the heart pacers
these heartpacers are powered by chemical batteries. the batteries contain plutonium-28 which lasts up to 87 years
