Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is an atom?
Made up of one type of element
What is a molecule?
One or more atoms joined together
What is the mass of an electron?
1/1840
What is the relative charge of an electron?
-1
What is the relative charge of a neutron?
0
What is the relative charge of a proton?
+1
What is the mass of a neutron?
1
What is the mass of a proton?
1
What does the atomic number show?
Number of protons (and also number of electrons because Elemis on the periodic table have no charge)
Where is the atomic number found?
It is the bottom number under the atomic symbol
Where is the atomic mass found?
It is the top number above the atomic symbol
What does the mass number show?
Number of protons + number of neutrons
What are isotopes?
- atoms of the same element with the same atomic symbol
- they have the same number of protons and electrons but a different number of neutrons.
What is the equation for the relative atomic mass of two or more isotopes?
Relative atomic mass=
((% of A x mass number) ➗ 100) + ((% of B x mass number) ➗ 100)
How is the periodic table arranged?
- in periods and groups
- it goes across from smallest to largest atomic number
