atomic structure Flashcards
give examples of different properties elements can have:
elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon and chlorine are non-metals and are gases at room temperature.
elements such as silver, chromium, copper and gold are shiny, solid metals.
what are atoms made up of ?
tiny central nucleus - where protons and neutrons are. Then orbiting around the nucleus are electrons.
what are compounds ?
substances made up of different types of atoms bonded together.
what are substances ?
All substances are made of tiny particles called atoms which can combine in a variety of ways, giving different substances.
what is a chemical bond ?
hold atoms together in compouds..
what is a molecule ?
a grouping of two or more atoms bonded together.
what is an atom?
smallest part of an element that can exist.
what is an element ?
small number of substances that are made up of only one type of atom.
