Atomic Structure Flashcards
Each element contains
Protons (positive)
Neutrons (neutral)
Electrons
Circles
Shells / energy levels
Periodic Table
The periodic table is in order of atomic.
Atomic number = position.
Atomic mass = mass.
Lightest -> heaviest
The mass number for each element =
the total number of protons and neutrons.
Atomic number equals…
number of protons and number of electrons
Figure out neutrons by
subtracting the atomic number from the mass number.

Notation
S, P, d, f notation
S, P, d, f
Meanings
Principle energy level (1, 2, 3, 4…)
(once filled - move onto next shell)
Sub-level (S, P, d)
Orbitals
Sub levels contain
orbitals
Orbitals contain
electrons - can hold up to 2.
Shapes (S, P, d)
1) S-shape (1 orbital) 2 max.
2) Dumbell shaped (3 orbitals) 6 max.
3) d sublevel (5 orbitals) 10 max.
