Atomic Structure Flashcards
Describe how the Dalton model of an atom has changed over time
They have discovered the existence of protons, neutrons and electrons
Give the charge of a proton
+ 1
Give the charge of the neutron
0 (neutral)
Give the charge of an electron
-1
Give the mass of a proton
One
Give the mass of a neutron
One
Give the mass of an electron
1/2000
Why do atoms contain equal numbers of protons and electrons
They are neutral as the charges cancel
Compare the size of an atom and the nucleus
The nucleus is very very small compared to the atom
Where in the atom would you find most of the mass?
Nucleus
What does the atomic number tell you?
The number of protons
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element with a different numbers of neutrons
Look at a periodic table. What is in a lithium atom?
3protons, 3 electrons, 4 neutrons
Why is the mass of a chlorine atom not a whole number
Atomic mass is the AVERAGE mass of an atom, chlorine has isotopes
75% of chlorine has a mass of 35, 25% has a mass of 75. Calculate the relative atomic mass.
((75x35) +(25x37))/100 = 35.5
