Atomic Structure Flashcards
Atomic number
Number of protons (only)
Atoms and elements
When a substance is only made up of 1 type of atoms
Atoms
Ana atom is the smallest part of an element that still has the properties of that element
Elements
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions
Carbon
A solid that can have 2 forms, grey graphite or pencil “lead” or the gemstone diamond! It is not a metal
Sulpher
A yellow solid non metal, it makes atches and gunpowder
Iron
A hard, silvery-grey, solid, metallic element. Itis very common, and is used to make ships, cars, skyscrapers etc.
Silver
A bright grey solid metal used to make jewelleryand ornaments
Gold
A heavy, precious yellow metallic element, used for jewellery
Sodium
A soft, silver white metallic element that is very reactive! It is used in street lighting as it glows yellow when burned. It is mixed with chlorine to make table salt
Robert boyle
An irish scientist who was referred to as the father of chemistry
A molocule
The smallest part of an element or compound that can exist on it’s own
A mixture
A mixture consists of two ormore substances that are mixed together butnot chemically combined e.g sAlad dressingis a mixture of water and oil
Compound
Is a completely new substance with it’s own properties, it is formed when two or more elements are chemically combined (usually by burning)
Example of elements
Gold, oxygen, copper, iron, helium, silver
