Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is Limewater?
Calcium Hydroxide
What is thermal decomposition?
The breaking down of compounds into simpler compounds or elements through heat.
What colour is NO2 gas?
Brown
How do you test for Oxygen gas?
It relights a glowing splint
What is electrolysis?
The breaking down of compounds into simpler compounds or elements through electricity.
What is the cell?
The container in which electrolysis takes place
What is the electrolyte?
The solution or molten substance to be electrolysed, it is a compound that can conduct electricity.
What is the anode?
The Positive electrode
What is the cathode?
The Negative electrode
What is the battery?
The power for the circuit
What happens if something is higher than Hydrogen in the reactivity series in Electrolysis?
Hydrogen is formed instead
What are ions?
Electrically charged particles of matter
Where do the positively charged ions go?
To the negative electrode (and vice versa)
What are ions like in a solid?
They are held in fixed positions
What reaction is needed to obtain Gold?
No reaction is needed
What is a native metal?
A metal that is found as the element itself
How do you work out the number of neutrons in an atom?
You take away the mass number (at the top) by the Atomic number (at the bottom).
How do you work out the number of protons and electrons in an atom?
After working out the number of neutrons, the remainder is the number of protons/electrons
How do you work out the electric configuration?
It is the number of electrons closest to the nucleus on the diagram and the number of electrons furthest from the nucleus on the diagram, e,g, 2,1.
What is decomposition?
The breaking down of a compound into simpler compounds or elements.
