Q

Explain what led to the plum pudding model being replaced by the nuclear model of the atom

A

Alpha particle scattering experiment
Positively charged alpha particles directed at thin sheet of gold foil
Most passed straight through so most of atom is empty space
A few alpha particles deflected through large angles
So mass is concentrated at the centre of the atom
And nuclei is positively charged
Plum pudding model has mass and charge spread throughout atom
