ATOMIC STRUCTURE Flashcards
What is an isotope? (Remember exactly)
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons and different masses, but the same amount of protons
What are the relative charges and masses of the subatomic particles?
Proton: Charge - +1, Mass - 1
Neutron: Charge - 0, Mass - 1
Electron: Charge - -1, Mass - 1/1836
How do the properties of isotopes differ from each other?
The chemical properties wouldn’t change, since the isotopes would have the same number of electrons and protons
The physical properties would change between isotopes, since the different amount of neutrons means different masses
What are the 2 types of ions?
Cations - positive ions
Anions - negative ions
What is the relative atomic and isotopic mass? (Remember exactly)
The weighted mean mass of an (atom of an element)/(isotope) relative to 1/12th the mass of a carbon atom
