Atomic Structure Flashcards
Atomic number
number of protons in the nucleus of an atom
(num of postive charges and negative = 0 also called neutral or num of elcectrons)
Atoms are neutral meaning:
Num of electrons = num of protons
Isotopes
Atoms that have same number of protons but different number of neutrons
Ex: c12 and c14 isotopes of carbon
Mass number
Total number of protons and neutrons
(Not given on the peidiroci table)
Average Atomic Mass
The atomic mass of an element when an isotopes are taken into consideration
Ions:
just atoms that have lost or gained electrons
How does an atom become an ion?
When an atom loses or gains electrons it becomes an ion
Atoms:
Are empty space
Nuetron
= Mass number- atomic mass num
Electron
= Atomic num- charge
Isotopes similarities
- Composed of the same element
- Have the same number of protons – Same atomic num
Isotopes differences
- Mass number
- num of neutrons
Net charge
= protons-electrons
