Atomic Structure Flashcards
Protons
Positive particles inside the nucleus
Neutrons
Neutral particles inside the nucleus. Slightly heavier than protons
Electrons
Negative particles orbiting the nucleus. Much lighter than protons and neutrons
Nucleons
Combined protons and neutrons
Atomic mass number
The number of nucleons in an atom
Atomic number
The number of protons in an atom. Determines the atomic symbol
Atomic symbol
A shorthand notation for an atom, e.g. H is Hydrogen
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element (so containing the same number of protons) with a different number of neutrons
Charge to mass ratio
The charge of a particle (in Coulombs) divided by its mass (in kilograms), in C/kg. AKA specific charge
Specific charge
The charge of a particle (in Coulombs) divided by its mass (in kilograms), in C/kg. AKA charge to mass ratio
