Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is an atom made up of ?
At the centre there is a nucleus containing
Protons: mass 1 charge +1
Neutrons: mass 1 charge 0
Around it are electrons arranged in shells
Electron: 1 over 2,000 and negative charge of -1 (very small)
How do they connect to the periodic table ?
The atomic number (how many protons) determines what element it is. The period table is in increasing atomic number.
The larger number is mass which is neutrons plus protons.
*proton and electron numbers are the same so if it’s atomic number 3 it also have 3 electrons
How would you write electron structures ?
First ring has 2 then each one has. 8
Remember proton and electron number are the same so always look at the atomic number
