Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is an atom ?
smallest particle of a chemical element to exist
What is an element ?
composed of one type of atom on the periodic table
What is a compound ?
2 or more different types of atoms that are chemically bonded
What is a mixture ?
2 or more types of elements and/or compounds that are chemically mixed.
What does the atomic number represent ?
Number of protons an element has
What does the mass number represent?
number of protons and neutrons
Where are protons and neutrons located ?
in the atoms nucleus
where are electrons located ?
electrons orbit the nucleus in outer shells
What is the relative charge of protons, neutrons and electrons ?
Protons = +1 Neutrons = 0 Electrons = -1
What is the relative mass of protons, neutrons and electrons ?
Protons = 1 Neutrons = 1 Electrons = 1/1800
What are the methods of separating mixtures ?
- Distillation (separating based on boiling point of mixtures)
- Filtration (separating insoluble solids from liquids)
- Fractional distillation (separating crude oil into different hydrocarbons
- Crystallisation
- chromatography
Describe the evolution of the particle model ?
- Plum pudding model (sphere of positive charge with negative electrons imbedded
- alpha particle experiment (atoms had a mass centred in the nucleus which had a positive charge
- Neil Bohr = discovered electrons and energy levels
- James Chadwick = discovered the neutron
What are group 1 elements ?
Alkali metals
- soft grey metals
- react violently with oxygen
- low density
- low melting point
- low boiling point
What are Group 2 elements?
Alkali earth metals
What are Group 7 elements ?
Halogens
- highly reactive
- can be used as sterilisers
What are Group 0 elements ?
Noble Gasses
- unreactive
- can be used in balloons or neon lights
what are transition metals?
Can be used as catalysts
- hard, shiny and conductors
- used as jewellery, wires and saucepans
How does Lithium react with oxygen ?
burns with a crimson red flame
How does Sodium react with oxygen ?
burns with an orange/yellow flame
How does Potassium react with oxygen ?
burns with a lilac flame
How does Lithium react with water ?
fizzes and floats
How does Sodium react with water ?
melts into a ball, fizzes and bubbles
How does potassium react with water ?
burns with a lilac flame and bubbles
How does lithium react with halogens ?
forms a white powder
How does sodium react with halogens ?
burns with yellow flame and forms white powder
How does potassium react with halogens ?
more vigorous reaction and forms a white powder
Describe the evolution of the periodic table:
- John Newland arranged elements in octaves where every eighth element had similar properties with increasing masses
- Dimitri Mendeleev ordered the elements based on atomic weight and left gaps for undiscovered elements
- Now, the table is arranged by atomic number and groups with similar properties (same number of electrons in outer shell)
