Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is an element?
A pure substance that consists entirely of one type of atom
How are molecules joined together?
They are joined by attractive forces called chemical bonds
What is the size of an atom?
The size of an atom is given by the atomic radius which is half it’s diameter.
What is the bond length?
Bond length=distance between two atoms
How big is an atomic radii and bond length?
10 to the power of -10 metres
How much is 1 nanometer
1x10 to the power of -9 m
What are the three subatomic particles? where are they located? What is each charge? What is the relative mass for each one?
Protons in nucleus. +1. 1
Neutrons in nucleus 0. 1
Electrons in shells. -1. 0.0005
What is the structure of an atom?
Atoms consist of a nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons in shells. The numbers of particles in an atom can be calculated from its atomic number and mass number.
