Atom Structure Flashcards
Atomic number.
Bottom number on an atom
Shows number of protons in the atom
Different in each atom, represents the atom (never changes)
What are isotopes?
Different forms of the same element, that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
Different isotopes have….
different masses.
Relative atomic mass is…
Average mass of all the isotopes that make up an element.
What is abundance?
How common or rare that isotope is.
Relative atomic mass equation.
Sum of (isotope abundance x relative atomic mass)
_____________________________________________________
Sum of abundances of all isotopes
Relative atomic mass symbol
Ar
What is atomic mass?
Number of neutrons and protons.
What determines how an element reacts?
Electrons on outer shell.
Also determines which group atoms go in.
Similar properties happen in the same group because of the outer electron.
What is a relative atomic mass (Ar) compared to?
Average mass of the element’s atoms, compared to 1/12 of a Carbon-12 atom.
Number of times heavier it is than 1/12 of a Carbon-12 atom.
Define molecules.
Molecules are 2 or more atoms, which are chemically bonded together.
What is an ion?
A charged particle
What is a mixture?
Contains two or more substances that are not chemically bonded.
Can be separated easily
List the diatomic molecules?
I Bring Clay For Our New House
I = iodine
B = bromine
C = chlorine
F = fluorine
O = oxygen
N = nitrogen
H = hydrogen
What is filtration, and the method?
Separates an insoluble solid and solvent
Use a filter paper, beaker, and a funnel (water is filtered into the beaker and insoluble solid is caught by the filter paper)
