Atom & Element Flashcards
an atom is the smallest particle that make up an element
Define the term Atom
An atom is the smallest unit of an element
Define the term Element
An element is made up with ONE type of atom
Subatomic Particles
- Protons
- Electrons
- Neutrons
Location, charge of Protons
Positively charged, found in the nucleus
Location, charge of Electrons
Negatively charged, orbit around the nucleus
- 1800X smaller than protons
Location, charge of Neutrons
Neutral (no charge), found in nucleus
Why are atoms neutral?
Because the number of electrons MUST EQUAL to the number of protons
What information does Electron Configuration give?
It tells us about the group and period that the element is in. It also shows us how many electrons there are in each shell
what are compounds
Compounds are made up of 2 or more elements
what are molecules
A molecule is a group of two or more non-metal atoms chemically bonded together.
- held together by covalent bonds
