Atom Flashcards
Atom
The smallest particle of an element that can exist.
Isotope
Isotopes of an element have the same number of protons (same Z), but a different number of neutrons (different N).
Energy Level
A definite value of energy possible for an electron, either in the ground state or an excited condition.
Ground State
When the electrons in an atom have their lowest possible energies.
Excited State
When the electrons in an atom have absorbed energy (like heat) and are not in ground state.
Atomic orbital
An atomic orbital is the region in which an electron may be found around a single atom.
Valence energy Level
The outermost energy level of an atom.
Valence electrons
The electrons in the outermost energy level of an atom.
Core electrons
All the electrons in an atom, excluding the valence electrons.
Lone Pair (of electrons)
A pair of electrons occupying an orbital in an atom or molecule and not directly involved in bonding.
Unpaired electron
An electron that occupies an orbital of an atom singly, rather than as part of an electron pair.
