ATMPs Flashcards
What are ATMPs?
Innovative therapies that include gene therapies, cell therapies, somatic-cell therapies and tissue-engineered products. ATMPs are designed to treat, prevent, or diagnose diseases and have the potential to provide significant advancements in medical treatment.
What is the aim of gene therapy?
Deliver healthy versions of a gene to correct a defect
How does gene therapy work? (simple)
Inserting recombinant genes into the body to treat diseases
What is the aim of somatic cell therapy?
Cells are manipulated to function differently to how it normally does in a healthy body
How does somatic cell therapy work? (simple)
T-cells are taken from a patient and re-engineered to fight a disease (e.g. cancer)
What part of the human body can be regenerated and what specifically allows regeneration to occur?
Human liver can be regenerated.
Special epithelial cells on the liver (hepatocytes in zone 2 that lie between the portal + central vein) are responsible.
